In Lesbian Connection in the autumn of 1999, we found the perfect vacation for us: a two-week Women's Magical Tour of Cornwall, for Beltane, organized by Pat Hogan of Sounds 'n Furies in Vancouver, British Columbia. We signed up.
We gave ourselves a few days in London first. There, we sought out ancient goddess images. We found the best in The British Museum's Room Number One, which features plunder from the Greek Cyclades islands. (We couldn't have dreamed at that point that the next year would find us in Greece, surrounded by thousands of these images.) |

Before we went to Cornwall, the group convened in Glastonbury, site of the ancient mystical Isle of Avalon and the Tor, a hill renowned from ancient times for its power. Then, to Avebury, a village entirely surrounded by a tremendous neolithic stone circle, more ancient than Stonehenge (which is a few hours away, also on the great Salisbury plain). We walked (actually, we slogged through the mud) from Avebury to Silbury Hill, a huge and mysterious artificial hill which resembles nothing so much as a breast of the great mother. It is roughly contemporary with the Egyptian pyramids. Although it has been excavated, its purpose remains unknown. |
