Charles is an astronomer. He has friends who curate the architecturally stunning (and controversial) new Rose Center for Earth and Space.
Its central feature is the new incarnation of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. Charles got us tickets to the planetarium show: not your 1950s planetarium! |

At The Met (a delightful walk across the park): The Golden Deer of Eurasia: Scythian and Sarmatian Treasures from the Russian Steppes |
While there, we also checked out the new Fighting Dinosaurs. On New Year's Eve, we walked across the park and went to the Frick Museum, where our favorite paintings were the contrasting portraits of Sir Thomas More and Oliver Cromwell. |
At the New York Historical Society, Bec and I were amused by the audio tour of the Henry Luce III Center and amazed by the collection of 140 (!) Tiffany lamps. The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian displays the plunder of earlier centuries' genocide in sensitive late-twentieth century style. I recommend it. I understand that in the next few years the Smithsonian will have a related museum in the Washington DC area. |
My cousin Pat took me to this exhibit. My favorite exhibit was on Women Designers in the USA, 1900 to 2000, at the Bard Graduate Center. Did you know that the designer of Jacqueline Bouvier's wedding gown (when she married John Kennedy) was an African American woman? Her name is Ann Lowe. The Bard doesn't seem to have a web site, but you can buy the fabulous book. . Miss Piggy was a delightful surprise at the end of this thought-provoking and wide-ranging exhibit. To fully appreciate her, you must imagine her life size (about three feet, not counting her headdress). |
I didn't enjoy the Museum of American Folk Art nearly as much as some other folk museums my brother Chip has introduced me to (but perhaps that was because it is in transition to a larger space):

The American Museum of the Moving Image was actually a different trip, but I recommend it. The American Craft Museum had a stunning exhibit of Venetian glass objects by American artists. Pat suggested we tour the Edward Steichen exhibit at the Whitney. Good idea. |
I was unexpectedly moved by the Christmas tree with the Neapolitan Baroque creche at the Met. |
