The Maltese temple culture is prehistoric. In most cases, there was little or no "archaeology." Typically, the "discovers" of a site plundered and blundered, and little was left in context for meaningful interpretation. Until the 1990s, the many rotund figures typical of the period were called the "fat ladies." Except in obvious cases, there is now a question as to their gender.
